How We Ranked the Destinations
Our ranking considers five factors: salary and benefits package, cost of living, quality of life, school quality, and ease of transition for first-time international teachers. Data is drawn from our recruitment network, teacher surveys, and publicly available expat indices.
1. United Arab Emirates
The UAE remains the number one destination for teachers seeking financial gain. Tax-free salaries typically range from AED 12,000–22,000 per month (£2,600–4,800), with accommodation provided or heavily subsidised. Dubai and Abu Dhabi offer world-class infrastructure, safety, and a huge expat community.
Best for: Saving money, luxury lifestyle, career progression
Consider: Summer heat (45°C+), cost of socialising, conservative dress codes outside resorts
2. Singapore
Singapore is home to some of the world’s best international schools. Salaries are competitive (SGD 4,500–9,000/month), and the city-state offers an exceptionally high quality of life with excellent healthcare, public transport, and food.
Best for: Career development, family life, cultural diversity
Consider: High cost of living (especially housing), humid climate year-round
3. Vietnam
Vietnam has emerged as a top-tier destination for teachers who want adventure, affordability, and a rapidly growing international school sector. Salaries range from $2,000–4,500/month, with a cost of living that allows for significant savings.
Best for: First-time international candidates, travel lovers, budget-conscious savers
Consider: Chaotic traffic (especially in Hanoi/HCMC), air quality in winter months
4. Qatar
Qatar offers some of the highest teaching salaries in the world, often surpassing the UAE. Post-World Cup infrastructure means excellent facilities, and the small size of the country makes it easy to navigate. Tax-free salaries and generous benefits make it financially compelling.
Best for: Maximum savings, modern facilities, short-term contracts
Consider: Smaller social scene than Dubai, extreme summer heat, limited nightlife
5. Spain
For teachers who prioritise lifestyle over savings, Spain is hard to beat. The growing number of British and international schools means more opportunities than ever. Salaries are lower (€1,800–3,500/month) but the quality of life — weather, food, culture — is exceptional.
Best for: Work-life balance, European travel, learning a second language
Consider: Lower salaries, bureaucratic visa process for non-EU citizens
Honourable Mentions
Malaysia — Great affordability and food scene, with growing international school demand. Thailand — Incredible lifestyle and travel, though salaries can be lower at some schools. Saudi Arabia — Highest salaries alongside the UAE, with rapidly modernising social scene. Japan — Unique cultural experience with excellent infrastructure, though language barrier is real.
